Sewing Safety
- Always
walk in the room
- Inform
the teacher of any accident. (wash your hands with hot water and soap if
you poke your finger)
- Don’t
sit on tables or machine cabinets.
- Sit up
straight, don’t rock or tip on the chairs.
- No
open shoes.
- Pick
up anything dropped immediately.
- Don’t
put anything in your mouth (pencils/pens, thread, pins etc.) Store pins &
needles in a pin cushion or box.
- Don’t
throw anything. Pass sharp objects with the handles first, never toss
them.
- Keep
sharp objects out of your lap.
- Cut on
the table or counter, never in the air or your lap.
- Store
& carry scissors & shears carefully. (use
the correct tool for the job).
- Never
talk to or look at anyone while at the machine.
- Don’t
attempt to fix anything.
- Place
the needle guard over the needle.
- Keep
fingers away from the path of the needle. Guide fabric on the bottom edge.
- Use the slow speed on the sewing machine.
- Lower
the presser foot before turning on the machine.
- Don’t
sew over pins.
- Always
turn off the machine when finished using it.
- Use
care not to touch the hot light bulb.
- Arrange
the cord of the machine to avoid a tripping hazard.
- Don’t
walk between the sewing machines
Ironing Safety
- Keep
hands away from the hot areas of the iron.
- Only
one person is to have their cloth on the ironing board at a time.
- Set
the iron temperature to match your fabric.
- Set
hot steam iron upright on the counter when not in use.
- Never
leave the iron unattended.
- Always
disconnect the iron from the outlet when not in use.
- Unplug
the iron when adding distilled water.
- Grasp
the plug rather than the cord when removing the plug from the outlet. Hold
the plug firmly and pull gently.
