Sewing Safety

 

  1. Always walk in the room
  2. Inform the teacher of any accident. (wash your hands with hot water and soap if you poke your finger)
  3. Don’t sit on tables or machine cabinets.
  4. Sit up straight, don’t rock or tip on the chairs.
  5. No open shoes.
  6. Pick up anything dropped immediately.
  7. Don’t put anything in your mouth (pencils/pens, thread, pins etc.) Store pins & needles in a pin cushion or box.
  8. Don’t throw anything. Pass sharp objects with the handles first, never toss them.
  9. Keep sharp objects out of your lap.
  10. Cut on the table or counter, never in the air or your lap.
  11. Store & carry scissors & shears carefully. (use the correct tool for the job).
  12. Never talk to or look at anyone while at the machine.
  13. Don’t attempt to fix anything.
  14. Place the needle guard over the needle.
  15. Keep fingers away from the path of the needle. Guide fabric on the bottom edge.
  16.  Use the slow speed on the sewing machine.
  17. Lower the presser foot before turning on the machine.
  18. Don’t sew over pins.
  19. Always turn off the machine when finished using it.
  20. Use care not to touch the hot light bulb.
  21. Arrange the cord of the machine to avoid a tripping hazard.
  22. Don’t walk between the sewing machines

 

Ironing Safety

 

  1. Keep hands away from the hot areas of the iron.
  2. Only one person is to have their cloth on the ironing board at a time.
  3. Set the iron temperature to match your fabric.
  4. Set hot steam iron upright on the counter when not in use.
  5. Never leave the iron unattended.
  6. Always disconnect the iron from the outlet when not in use.
  7. Unplug the iron when adding distilled water.
  8. Grasp the plug rather than the cord when removing the plug from the outlet. Hold the plug firmly and pull gently.
