    Mr. Jobe, Director of Technology:
Adding District Printers to Your Personal Windows 7 Laptop

Do this once for each printer you are adding to your Windows 7 laptop. Note that it works best if you are connected to the school network (wired or wirelessly) when working through this procedure. If you are not connected to the school network I would expect difficulties.

    - Click the START button.
    - Choose DEVICES AND PRINTERS.
    - Click ADD A PRINTER.
    - Click ADD A LOCAL PRINTER.
    - Choose CREATE A NEW PORT, pull down the list and select STANDARD TCP/IP PORT. Click NEXT.
    - To the right of HOSTNAME OR IP ADDRESS type the name of the printer --

    - Leave the box that says "QUERY THE PRINTER.." checked (or check it if it has gotten unchecked). Click NEXT.
    - Additional port information MAY BE required. If this information is required pull down the menu and select HEWLETTPACKARD JETDIRECT. Click NEXT.

    - If the software for the printer you have entered is already installed on your computer a screen will appear asking if you want to USE THE DRIVER THAT IS CURRENTLY INSTALLED or REPLACE THE DRIVER. Choose the option to USE THE DRIVER THAT IS CURRENTLY INSTALLED and then click NEXT.
    - If the software for the printer you have entered is not installed on your computer a screen will appear prompting you to identify the printer driver by selecting brand and model (in some cases your computer may be able to automatically select the brand and model on its own).

to select a printer driver (if prompted):
    - On the left choose the brand, HP.
    - On the right choose the model number. If the model number is not in the list on the right click WINDOWS UPDATE and be prepared to wait for several minutes. After the update is done look for the model number again, select it, and then click NEXT.
If, after doing Windows Update, you can not find the printer driver for the printer look at the very end of the HP drivers list and locate the HP UNIVERSAL print driver. This can be used when no specific print driver is available for your computer.

    - Enter a name for the printer. You can enter whatever you like. This name is how you will see the printer listed on your computer when you select to print from any program. Using the Fully Qualified Domain Name (example: gupperjh3.norridge80.org ) makes sense in most cases, but you can use whatever name you like. Click NEXT.

    - Select the dot next to DO NOT SHARE THIS PRINTER so that it is filled in (the printer is already shared, your computer doesn't need to try to share it). Click NEXT.
    - Choose whether or not you'd like to set the printer as default and then click FINISH.
