It is a pleasure to be joining District 80 and Giles School this year. Most recently I had been the assistant principal at Union Ridge School. In that role I also became familiar with the excellent reputation of the community, students and staff of Giles. I very much am looking forward to getting to know and work with all of you in the spirit of providing our students with the best education possible. The website will always have the latest information available to you. Please visit regularly to keep up to date on all the great things going on. If you are not finding the answer to your question please contact us and we will be happy to assist you. Go Lions! Sincerely, Jeff Bergholtz
Hello, and welcome back from Spring Break! It is hare to believe we are entering the fourth quarter. Time for everyone to dig deep and finish the year strong! Some important dates: Tuesday, April 9th, No School due to Election Day Friday, April 12th, 3rd Quarter Report Cards sent home Wednesday, April 17th, 11:45 dismissal for School Improvement Planning Finally, as we prepare to transition to the Common Core State Standards in Reading and Math, it is important for parents to know and understand how these new standards are different from what we are used to with the Illinois Learning Standards. Here is a great power point that can help parents know their role in how to support their students as they are asked to engage in more complex tasks in both reading and math: http://engageny.org/sites/default/files/resource/attachments/shifts-for-students-and-parents.pdf
Happy New Year!! I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season and found a chance to relax and spend time with loved ones. You may have already heard, but we have moved to the "Virtual Backpack" for our general community fliers (i.e. park district, little league etc.) that get sent home. There will still be Friday Folders for school paperwork that needs to be sent home, but the amount of paper in those folders will be reduced by the "Virtual Backpack" which can be accessed under the Parent and Student Resource tab, scroll down to find it alphabetically and click on the link. Fliers should start appearing there shortly. Also under the Parent and Student Resource tab is, "Help Stop Bullying." By clicking on this link you can enter information about bullying types of behavior that may be going on. This was created to give students another way to report things that are happening when they may not feel comfortable telling an adult during the day. These reports will go to myself (Mr. Bergholtz) and the school social worker. Although not all the information requested is required, like you name for example, we will be able to best address potential concerns when we have as much information as possible. Dates to keep in mind: 1/10 - ST&P Meeting at 7:00pm 1/16 - School Improvement Day, 11:45am Dismissal 1/18 - End of 2nd Quarter 1/21 - Martin Luther King Day, No School 1/28 - 2nd Quarter Report Cards Sent Home

You can help your child do his or her best on the test by:
2.) Making sure your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before testing; 3.) Providing breakfast on the mornings of testing; 4.) Reminding your child to ask the teacher questions if he or she does not understand the test directions; 5.) Letting your child know that you have confidence in his or her ability to do his or her best; and 6.) Advising your child not to worry about the test-just do the best he or she can.
