Leigh School: Welcome
Latest News **********
Welcome back from spring break! 4th quarter is here and we are entering the home stretch! Some important upcoming dates: Tuesday, April 9th: No School for Election Day Friday, April 12th: 3rd Quarter Report Cards go home Wednesday, April 17th: 11:45 a.m. dismissal for School Improvement Planning Day Finally, as we prepare to transition to the Common Core State Standards in Reading and Math, it is important for parents to know and understand how these new standards are different from what we are used to with the Illinois Learning Standards. Here is a great power point that can help parents know their role in how to support their students as they are asked to engage in more complex tasks in both reading and math: http://engageny.org/sites/default/files/resource/attachments/shifts-for-students-and-parents.pdf
ISAT (Illinois State Achievement Test) testing for students in grades 3-8 will take place from March 5th-15th. All students will be tested in reading and math, and students in grades 4 and 7 will also take the science test. Please make sure that your child is here each day of school during testing, and on time. These tests provide valuable information about your child’s learning and progress and also helps us set our school goals. The schedule for ISAT is as follows (all tests are given from 9:00-10:15 a.m.): Week 1: Tuesday, March 5th: Reading 1 Wednesday, March 6th: Reading 2 Thursday, Mach 7th: Reading 3 Friday, March 8th: Math 1 Week 2: Monday, March 11th: Math 2 Tuesday, March 12th: Math 3 Wednesday, March 13th: Science 1 (4th and 7th grades only) Thursday, March 14th: Science 2 (4th and 7th grades only) Friday, March 15th: Makeups You can help your student to be prepared for ISATs by making sure that he or she gets enough sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and is at school each day of testing on time. We know our students at Leigh will do a great job and give their best effort! Other happenings in March include our Spring Musicale Concert, which will be on March 20th at 7:00 p.m., and the continuation of our girls basketball and scholastic bowl seasons.

Happy New Year and welcome back! District 80 will now be using a “Virtual Backpack” on our website to distribute fliers from our community partners (such as the Norridge Park District and others). To check the “Virtual Backpack,” simply click on the “Student and Parent Resources” page, scroll down, and click on the “Virtual Backpack” link. This is how we will now distribute information from community programs such as the Norridge Park District and others. We will continue to send home a Friday Folder each Friday with our school and district paperwork, so anything from Leigh School, District 80, and the PTA will be sent home each Friday. We have also added a resource to address bullying, also located under the student and parent resources tab called “Help Stop Bullying.” By clicking on this link you can enter information about bullying types of behavior that may be going on. This was created to give students another way to report things that are happening when they may not feel comfortable telling an adult during the day. These reports will go to the school social worker and building principal. Although not all the information requested is required, we will be able to best address potential concerns when we have as much information as possible. Some upcoming important dates: Wednesday, January 16th is early dismissal at 11:45 a.m. The end of 2nd Quarter is Friday, January 18th. Monday, January 21st is no school in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 2nd Quarter report cards will go home on Monday, January 28th.
Happy Holidays!!! Thank you to all who attended our Holiday Concert and supported our musicians and singers last night. The band and chorus programs did a wonderful job preparing and sounded great. Buddy classrooms will pair up and move through a series of activities that are both creative and kinesthetic. Our last day of school before winter break is Friday, December 21st. Students are dismissed at 3:00 p.m. There will be no school on Tuesday, November 6th for Election Day.
LEIGH SCHOOL’S 2ND ANNUAL LITERACY NIGHT! All Leigh School students and families are invited to attend an evening focused on literacy. At our 2nd annual Literacy Night, the Leigh Staff will present many literacy skills and strategies that our students use every day and provide tons of ways you can enhance students’ literacy at home. Because our students are an integral part of our school community, all Leigh students are encouraged to attend. All students in grades kindergarten through 5th will participate with their homeroom teacher while 6th through 8th grade students will participate with different content area teachers. Literacy Night will consist of a brief introduction followed by 3 sessions. Each family will choose the 3 sessions they attend. A program description handout was sent home in your student’s Friday folder on 10/19. At each session, raffle tickets will be distributed for some pretty awesome book baskets that will be raffled off the next day. Literacy Night is a great way to strengthen the home-school connection and become more involved with school! We hope to see you at Literacy Night on 10/30/12! Literacy Night RSVP Form

Please join us this evening for RtI Parent Information Night in the Library at Leigh starting at 6:30 p.m. Our RtI Leaders will present information about our program and answer any questions you may have. ITBS testing has begun for grades 2-5, testing for grades 6-8 will begin next week. A letter went home in Friday Folders last Friday with some general information. You can help your student(s) to do their best by making sure that they are here every day during testing, ensuring that they have a healthy breakfast and get a good night’s sleep, and encouraging them to do their best and ask questions when they do not understand something. We really enjoyed our anti-bullying assembly with boom Troupe last Friday! Thank you, Leigh PTA! Here are some photos: For more information on Boom Troupe, please visit their website: http://www.boomtroupe.com/.
