Mr. Roselund’s 7th Grade S.S. Information

Your child’s S.S. grade will be determined by 2 main factors: A) tests and quizzes and B) assignments.  Extra credit will be offered sporadically throughout the quarter but not in particularly large quantities.

Tests and quizzes- Tests or quizzes will usually be given every 2-3 weeks and will generally cover 1-2 chapters worth of material.  Tests and quizzes in this class will not be given in the familiar format of multiple choice/matching/true or false.  They will be entirely in short answer and essay form.  Because this requires the student to know and be able to write about a lot of information in significant detail, the entire exact test will be given to them at the start of each unit.  This will allow them to focus their study very specifically to the questions actually on the test (which will cover all main topics from the unit).  These are not take-home tests, however.  The student will need to write the test answers in class on test days.  Opportunities will be given to the students to do corrections.

The only exceptions to this format will be two tests on the U.S. Constitution and one on the Illinois Constitution.  These will be done in the more traditional format of matching/multiple choice/true or false and essay.  Detailed study guides will be given before each test.

Assignments- Assignments will fall into one of two areas:  the S.S. notebook and supplementary activities.

The S.S. notebook- Each student will need to have a S.S. notebook in class with them every day.  All notebook assignments will be done in class.  They will be graded three times a year and will be worth 100 points each time.  More detailed information about notebook expectations will be given to the students in a few days.

Supplementary activities- These assignments may occasionally be done in class but usually will be done outside of class for homework.  They will entail both preparing for new material and applying knowledge for information that has already been covered.  These will generally be graded as being done completely and on time rather than right or wrong.
