Network Awareness Notes
Our technology scope and sequence is made up of 13 sections. Not all sections are covered at every
grade level.
Network Awareness is section 6 of 13.
Network Awareness is a section included in grades K-5.
The number of checklist items at each grade level:
Kindergarten, 3 items
1st, 4 items
2nd, 3 items
3rd, 5 items
4th, 6 items
5th, 5 items
What type of items are covered in Network Awareness?
* logging in and logging out
* accessing files from shared resource areas
* saving and retrieving work from personal save space
* selecting a network printer and printing to it
* basic network concepts (what is a server, what is a network, what are the
benefits of a network)
Software:
Word, KidWorks, HyperStudio, PowerPoint, or any other title that allows
students to open, save, and print files can be used for the lessons that
require opening, saving, or printing of work. All of the other
functionality required to complete this section is built into Windows
(login/logout, opening network drives, etc.).
Checklists can be found online at
http://www.norridge80.org/computer/ChecklistCreator.asp
Lessons that focus on accomplishing the items on the checklists can be found
in each TechWorks box where this section is taught. You can of course make
up your own lesson or modify the existing lesson, but you may want to look
at the supplied lessons as a starting point.
If you find a checklist item that you are unsure of what the intended goal
is you can refer to the sample lesson for clarification, refer to the
TechWorks teacher's guide, or let me know and I'll try to help find the
answer or help clarify. Items like "the student can demonstrate appropriate
behavior at the computer" or "the student can explain the basics of how a
computer operates" seem vague but the teacher's guide does give specific
items to think about when teaching these checklist items.
What about removing items or adding items to the checklists? Please make
note of any items that you believe should be removed or added to the
checklist on the checklists that you turn in at the end of each quarter. Approved changes will show up in the online checklists before the
start of the next school year.
Thank you,
Mr. Jobe
